You Belong is a charity initiative of flickerflame that is dedicated to empowering refugees that have recently been resettled in Australia to find their place and discover their purpose.
Serve at a Welcome Picnic that take place to promote social cohesion between host communities and existing groups of refugees. These events are a celebration of cultural diversity and engagement through food, dance, music, sport, games and activities. Activity based language development and cultural immersion and understanding are just some of the goals of these events.
Host a Welcome Dinner with newly settled refugee families within your community. These shared meals are an opportunity for local families within the host community to befriend and welcome newly settled refugee families. In addition to extending benevolent hospitality welcome dinners enable relational connections to be formed that promote community level integration and support.
Provide a Welcome Pack for newly settled refugee families within your community. These packs will include “classic” Australian grocery items and helpful essential supplies to give families a warm welcome to life in their new home in Australia.
Become a Refugee Guide and come alongside a refugee on a one-to-one basis. Refugee Guides will help refugees orient their way around their new community, provide informal language and cultural training and offer general support and friendship.
Sponsor a refugee to participate in The GROW Program, designed to help people who have survived critical incidence and tragic circumstances. The program is based on scientific research into post-traumatic growth (PTG) and ethical constructs designed to help individuals ‘cultivate’ key character qualities and core competencies for overall health and wellbeing.
The GROW Program is best known for its use with Syrian and Iraqi refugees (including Yazidi, Christian, and Muslim faiths) and capacity aid recovery from displacement, traumatic life events, and emotional despair (typically due to loss of property, loved ones, and livelihood).
Fundraise, educate and advocate for refugees by hosting a screening of 'Human Flow' in your school, church, community group or backyard. Contact us now to have a You Belong representative speak at your event.
Over 65 million people around the world have been forced from their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War II. Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei, gives a powerful visual expression to this massive human migration. The documentary elucidates both the staggering scale of the refugee crisis and its profoundly personal human impact.
Volunteer at a You Belong Community Hub and provide language, cultural and psycho-social support to refugees that are looking for additional support and community integration. We hope to host various educational and therapeutic workshops run by our own staff and guest organizations.
Sponsor a refugee to attend one of the many vocational training workshops designed to help refugees to discover their unique gifts and strengths, leading to greater clarity, direction and purpose for their life and vocational pursuits. These course will guide participants on a step-by-step interactive and insightful journey filled with teachings and exercises.
Invest in the future of a refugee by partnering with us to provide employment and job creation opportunities to skilled and unskilled refugees. Refugees have a limited time to integrate into Australian society and the workforce before their settlement support expires. We are committed to partnering with local businesses and those interested in creating jobs and opportunities for refugees to become financially independent and support their families.
We know that it is not just WHAT we do that matters, but also WHY & HOW we serve. And so, these values are at the heart of everything we do at You Belong.
